I don't like to admit this too often, but I do enjoy the occasional bit of reality TV. I'm picky though; I don't pick up the remote for Survivor or Dancing with the Stars. My reality television show of choice is, without a doubt, The Biggest Loser. I'm constantly inspired by the contestants on that show and how they all face seemingly insurmountable uphill battles for their weight loss. And almost all of them succeed. If you're a fan, then you might remember season 3 winner Erik Chopin....

If you like your summers hot (really, really hot) and dry, and if you like to spend your getaways getting treatments in the spa and then lounging all day at the pool with an icy drink in hand, then Palm Springs, Ca might just be your perfect destination.  Now is a good time to go (if you don't mind the heat) because a number of Palm Springs hotels and spas have banded together to offer an awesome Cool Pools summer campaign that includes all sorts of great deals and events.  Highlights...

  • Fire pit blog
    July 8th, 2010
I was fortunate enough to spend the Fourth of July at a house with a fire pit, and now I’m hooked. In the Bay Area, nights are pretty much always cool, and having a fire allowed us to stay cozy outside, enjoying the stars and good conversation. If you want to avoid the environmental aspects of burning wood, the River Rock Fire Pit from Restoration Hardware is a gorgeous option. It runs on an eco-friendly gel fuel made from post-consumer recycled waste and brings a beautiful zen...

Imagine what your life would be like if you could go to the spa every day? Massages on Mondays, facials on Tuesdays, body wraps on Wednesdays, etc. Stress would be a thing of the past. Your skin would glow 24/7. Life would be good. But most of us can't afford a daily trip to the spa, which is why it's so nice to be able to bring a bit of the spa into our own homes. Even if it's just a few candles in the bathroom—every little relaxing detail helps. If you want to truly recreate the spa...

  • Lotus flower essences
    July 7th, 2010
I’m wrapping up my final week of a 4-week test with Lotus Wei flower essences—elixirs containing energetic infusions of flowers to enhance your state of mind.   I started the test with Inspired Action, a mix of five flower essences designed to inspire creativity, enhance motivation, and foster spiritual insight. Although the weeks that followed brought about some noticeable results, last week I was confident that I’d had enough and I was ready to move on. Now, I admit I may...

  • NH Royal Beach Grand Luxury Resort Pool
    July 2nd, 2010
When it comes to vacations, some people like to get away from it all while others prefer to go on adventures and soak up their new surroundings. On a recent trip to the NH Royal Beach Grand Luxury Resort on Bavaro Beach in the Dominican Republic, I found a great opportunity to do both. (Bonus: See my photos) The NH Royal Beach is an adults-only getaway with access to a gorgeous beach and plenty of palapas on the white sand. On my first day there, I was able to sit in a hammock slung on two palm...

  • Guinea Pigs
    July 2nd, 2010
A fellow Spa editor recently told me that my favorite face wash is tested on animals. As someone who owns two darling guinea pigs (Olivia and Chloe, above), I felt sick—it made me realize that I need to be doing better research into what brands I use. I did a little poking around on Caring Consumer and found that my medicine cabinet is home to a host of other culprits, too, such as my deodorant and sunscreen. The idea of reviewing every product I use is a bit daunting, but I know it...
