Skincare and Beauty
We’re on the road a lot at Spa (Sr. Editor Tara is actually en route to Nevis as we speak!), and there’s nothing worse than the thought of having one of our beloved beauty products explode in transit and spill its contents all over our luggage. Luckily, skin care expert and celebrity esthetician, Renée Rouleau, shared her foolproof tips for preventing such leaks with us, and we’ve steered clear of any incidents since. Check out Renee’s tips below, and happy travels!
Let out the air. Extra air trapped in bottles from products that have been opened previously can cause plastic containers to explode when air pressure changes due to elevation. Open the cap, squeeze out almost all the excess air, and quickly replace the cap.
Cover bottle openings with plastic wrap. For extra insurance before you replace the cap, place plastic wrap over the opening of each bottle, and then screw the cap back on. This gives an extra layer of protection in the event a cap comes loose during travel.
Put each product in its own zip-top bag. Even with all these tips, it is still possible that products can leak, so the best tip of all is to put each bottle in its own individual zip-top bag, that way if it does leak, at least you can be sure it won’t get all over your belongings.

We’ve shared with you some of our favorite beauty products that benefit breast cancer awareness, but also wanted to let you know about a new program that’s helping women with cancer preserve their chance to have children. Fertility Rescue – a program at the Sher Institutes of Reproductive Medicine – offers women diagnosed with cancer in their reproductive years (ages 18-45) the opportunity to harvest and freeze their eggs at no cost.
The egg harvesting and freezing process is a pricey one, one that many insurance companies do not cover. Fertility Rescue works with women to harvest their eggs before they undergo chemotherapy, freeze them during the treatment process, then fertilize them and transfer them back to the uterus when the women are cancer free and are trying to get pregnant. So far the program has helped about 50 women at its eight nationwide locations, with no plans to stop soon.

There are a ton of beauty and home products out there that donate a portion of their proceeds in October to Breast Cancer Awareness (check out a few of our beauty faves in our new gallery), and spas are joining suit as well, ramping up the awareness by making donations of their own. Here are a couple of charity-friendly treatments:
The OH! Spa at Rhode Island’s Ocean House resort is offering “Pink” services, and 5% of the proceeds from them will go to the American Cancer Society. Try the Rose Delight Facial (60 minutes, $140), which uses local rosehips, or the Pretty in Pink Manicure with a Purpose (45 minutes, $50), which features the spa’s signature raspberry shea butter balm and naturally, pink nail polish. Something else we love: Breast cancer survivors receive 10% off all of the spa’s treatments in October.
Across the country at destination spa Miraval in Arizona, a special manicure and pedicure were created for the month of October, and 10% of the proceeds from them will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The Mani for the Cure (50 minutes, $65) and Pedi for the Cure (50 minutes, $80) each include thermal mineral salt bath soaks, exfoliation treatments, massages and a fresh coat of SpaRitual’s “IN PINK” nail polish. Even better, you get to take the rest of the bottle home with you!

Every gal loves getting new nail polish; especially when it’s a new shade from SpaRitual, the eco-friendly beauty company that uses only vegan ingredients and no harmful chemicals like toluene. (Check out some other harmful beauty ingredients you should avoid.) So it looks like we’ll be planning a trip to one of the four Trump Hotel Collection properties in the U.S., because as of this month, five new shades from SpaRitual are now available exclusively at The Spa at Trump.
Each shade was inspired by a different Trump property, like a pretty green called Central Park View for the Trump International Hotel & Tower New York and a glittery silver Viva Vegas shade for Trump’s Sin City location. The fifth shade, Ocean Club Coral, was created especially for Ivanka Trump. All of the shades will be available at each of the properties and are priced between $10-$12. For more info, visit trumphotelcollection.com.

We’ve all been there: It’s the first day of beach season and we wish our legs and arms weren’t quite so winter-pale. So we head to the tanning salon for a base tan to prep skin for summer rays. Right? Wrong. In one study supported by the National Cancer Institute, scientists exposed volunteers to UVA/UVB rays, similar to what they’d experience at a tanning salon. Then they exposed the volunteers to rays equivalent to natural sunlight. The result: all volunteers had new DNA damage, showing that salon ‘pre-tans’ offer no protection. Sunlamps “afford little to no protection from subsequent UV exposure,” say researchers from the National Cancer Institute. In fact, they blame artificial UV sources (i.e., tanning beds) for the rapid rise in malignant melanoma among young women. Want that golden glow without risking future wrinkles and skin cancer? The solution is simple — spray, baby, spray.

But what if you're out at the salon, standing in front of a rack of hundreds of shades? A computer isn't going to do you much good. And that's why OPI recently released a free iPhone app version of their nail studio. Just click here to see OPI's app (warning: clicking the link will open iTunes if it is installed on your computer).
We know this will help us a ton next time we're out shopping for a fun new color.
