Why You Should Add Dairy to Your Skincare Routine

Here's why you should add dairy to your skincare regimen and how to use milk, yogurt, and cream for a smooth, soft, even complexion.

Yogurt

Most of us grew up putting milk on our cereal. Some of us drank big glasses of it at the dinner table because, according to our parents, it promised strong teeth and healthy bones.

But did your mom ever tell you that milk is great for the skin and that it can be used-straight from the supermarket-for a soft, smooth, even complexion? Nina Naidu, M.D., board certified plastic surgeon and founder of Anokha skincare products, explains why-and shares some of her favorite milk tips.

You've said that you "raid the dairy aisle" to create the best skincare products. What is it about dairy that is so great for the skin?

Milk protein moisturizes the skin. In addition, it contains lactic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid that is very effective for use in superficial peels. It exfoliates, hydrates, and can also help even out pigmentation.

Are milk-based treatments OK for people with sensitive skin?
Milk treatments are perfect for sensitive skin; they are very gentle and non-irritating.

Is there anyone who should not use milk or dairy products on their skin?
People who have an allergy to milk when applied topically should obviously not use them, but people who just have difficulty digesting milk (i.e. lactose intolerance) will not have a problem.
What's a good way to use milk or dairy products on the face at home?
You can use organic whole milk, yogurt, or cream as a moisturizing cleanser. My personal favorite is yogurt, which is incredibly refreshing in the summer. Wet your face with lukewarm water, scoop a handful of organic yogurt out of the container, massage it into your skin for a minute, then wash it off with warm water. You have to try it to believe it.
And for the body?
Run a hot bath and pour in a cup of whole milk. Your skin will be softer and smoother.
