Travel Guide: Dead Sea

What to do and where to stay on a trip to Jordan, Israel and the Dead Sea.
by Amy Westervelt

Getting There: Direct flights (11 hours) to Amman are available from JFK in New York City via Royal Jordanian.

Tours: Evason Ma’In Hot Springs (pictured) and the Six Senses Spa can organize a tour of local areas, including Petra, the Wadi Rum desert, and the Dead Sea. To explore the country’s nature reserves, contact Wild Jordan, which runs several ecolodges and arranges nature guides for visitors.

Weather: It’s extremely dry and hot in Jordan during the summer, with temperatures up to 115 degrees; winter finds temperate days and fairly cold evenings.

What to Wear: The dress code in Jordan ranges from very conservative (burqas) to Western shorts and T-shirts. A good tip: Keep your shoulders covered.

Money: Prices in Jordan tend to be quite high, and the exchange rate still favors the Jordanian dinar over the U.S. dollar.

Language: Because Jordan was a British mandate for several decades, many people speak English in the country, making it easy to get around.
