I see Stott, Winsor, and regular Pilates on fitness schedules all the time. What is the difference between the three?
Karen Armstrong-a Pilates master instructor at the Palo Alto, California, location of LaBelle Day Spas & Salons-gives us this simple breakdown: Pilates refers to the original method created by Joseph Pilates, now sometimes called True Pilates. Romana Kryzanowska has carried on Pilates' legacy, teaching a method that focuses on control, centering, precision, flowing movement, and breathing.
Kryzanowska trained and certified both Moira Stott Merrithew and Mari Winsor, who went on to found Stott Pilates and Winsor Pilates, respectively. Stott differs from True Pilates in that it targets specific areas-namely the legs, hips, and pelvic floor-but the method maintains the essence of the original principles by teaching intelligent exercise with mindful movement.
Mari Winsor's method of "dynamic sequencing" offers a low-intensity, calorie-burning workout focused on core and postural muscles. Her studios are for classes only, and she does not offer her own certification. Try each type of class and ask plenty of questions to find the right method for you.
