Spa Tested: Home Hair Removal Kits

Want to remove unsightly hair in the privacy of your own home? We tested a few hair removal products and were pleasantly surprised by the results.

Most of us have hair on our body that we’d like to get rid of, and sometimes it’s nice to be able to do so in the privacy of our own home—while still having options in addition to shaving. But how do the alternatives stack up? We tried a few and were pleasantly surprised by the results.

Bliss Poetic Waxing Kit

How it works: This kit contains a gentle cleanser to prep the skin, a mug of wax, and an aloe-based soother for any post-removal redness. Added bonus: This oldie but goodie just underwent a revamp, and the mug is now microwave-safe, making it easier to heat.

Treatment tip: Follow the heating instructions carefully and do a spot test by placing a small drop of wax on the inside of your wrist. If it feels too hot, wait about 30 seconds before applying the wax to sensitive areas.

Verdict: “The wax has a pleasant lavender smell that almost makes the process seem relaxing.”

Whish Hair Inhibiting Gel

How it works: Available in three scents (pomegranate, lemongrass, and almond), this gel has a dual purpose: Organic aloe and shea butter keep skin hydrated, while chaparral extract reduces hair density and slows growth.

Treatment tip: For the best results, make sure to apply the gel daily—especially after shaving, waxing, or undergoing a laser treatment.

Verdict: “Hair was noticeably finer after three weeks of daily use on legs as a complement to shaving. The gel dries more quickly than lotions or oils but still leaves skin soft.”

Karmissie Deluxe Threader

How it works: Developed by esthetician Anita Sun, this kit allows you to replicate the traditional Indian technique of threading by holding a Y-shaped tool against the area you wish clear of hair and pressing the trigger. Disposable thread, pre-threading lotion, “chalk” rice powder, a skin soother, and an instructional DVD are all included.

Treatment tip: Be sure to watch the DVD before trying to use the tool.

Verdict: “This method is highly effective—but when you’re just learning the technique, it can be more painful on certain areas of the face than waxing.”
