How do I help my teenage son and daughter head back to school this year with clear skin?

The American Academy of Dermatology reports that nearly all young adults between the ages of 12 and 17 are affected by acne at least occasionally. Beyond being a cosmetic concern, acne can cause emotional scarring and damage to self-esteem during a critical time in a young person’s development. To keep skin clear, I recommend:

  • A thorough consultation with a licensed skincare professional. A dermatologist or esthetician can create a customized home regimen to keep skin clear. Plus, teens are more likely to take skincare advice when it doesn’t come from Mom or Dad.
  • Keeping the basics in mind. Disinfect the skin with thorough cleansing, exfoliate dead skin blocking follicles, and protect inflamed skin from the sun. Look for multipurpose products, which make it easy to follow the regimen on a daily basis.
  • Cleansing twice daily. Alpha hydroxy acids (my choice is glycolic acid) clean the skin thoroughly without stripping natural oils while reducing bacteria to minimize breakouts.
  • Carrying an alpha hydroxy acid or beta hydroxy acid product and wipes. This will help teens get cleaner, bacteria-free skin in an instant as they sweat or exercise throughout the day. No water is needed!
  • Using sunscreen. Ninety percent of skin aging is due to sun exposure, and 80 percent occurs before the age of 18. The incidence of skin cancer in young people is at an all-time high. Emphasize that sunscreen must be worn every day and reapplied after physical activity. Urge teens to look for lightweight moisturizing sunscreens that are labeled with SPF 30 for maximum protection.
