Create Your Own Indonesian Beauty Ritual

Boreh Beauty Ritual

Boreh is a time-honored Balinese remedy that eases muscle pain, increases blood circulation, and enhances chi (the life force of the body). Jamu Asian Spa Rituals founder Kim Collier offers these instructions to create your own boreh ritual at home.

What you'll need

  • Traditional Indonesian music (gamelan)
  • Incense
  • Flower petals
  • Boreh spice paste (see recipe below)
  • Ginger or coconut massage oil
  • Fresh shredded ginger root, steeped in hot water

(For Boreh)

  • 4 tsp. sandalwood powder
  • 2 tsp. whole cloves
  • 2 tsp. ginger
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. coriander seeds
  • 1–2 tsp. rice powder (available at fromnaturewithlove.com
  • 1 tsp. turmeric
  • 1 tsp. Jamu ginger spice oil
  • 1 tsp. galangal water (place shredded galangal root in water, let soak overnight, and then strain; galangal root available at mountainroseherbs.com)

(To make paste)

Grind together the first 7 ingredients using a mortar and pestle. Add the ginger spice oil and galangal water to make a thick paste. If you cannot tolerate a strong heat sensation, add more rice powder.

How to do it

  1. Create a sacred space: Prepare your bathroom with Indonesian music and incense, and offer up a prayer of gratitude.
  2. Draw a warm bath with flower petals and designate a place to lie down and relax while the boreh paste is drying.
  3. Quietly wash your feet and hands, allowing the water to cleanse both your body and mind.
  4. Apply the boreh paste with your hands, using a thin layer to cover the skin. You may also use coconut or ginger massage oil on your hands, feet, hair, and scalp. Wrap yourself in a blanket and lie down for 20 minutes. Note: The skin may feel itchy, tingly, or warm. If this is uncomfortable, take a bath or rinse off in the shower at any time.
  5. Recline in the flower bath while sipping ginger tea and breathing deeply to increase the flow of chi (life force).
  6. Step out of the bath and, with skin still warm, briskly apply massage oil, starting at the feet and moving up toward the heart.
  7. Finish with a blessing or prayer. (Try the Balinese blessing Om suasti astu, which translates to "Peace in your heart and in the world.")
